This document describes conditions and guidelines for claiming conformance to ICAS conformance level A standards. Questions or comments relating to ICAS conformance level A may be addressed to icas@aatideas.org or via other designated methods for contacting AAT ICAS.
conditions for use of ICAS conformance logo A—
ICAS licensees are granted limited permission to use ICAS conformance logo A, or alternatively the "ICAS in use level A" alt text, in accordance with AAT ICAS Basilicum-2027, to indicate a claim of conformance to ICAS conformance level A subject to the following conditions:
Claims of conformance with ICAS level A are also subject to the conditions specified for the generic ICAS in use level of conformance. ICAS licensees claiming conformance with ICAS level A must agree to abide by the conditions of conformance with the generic ICAS in use logo specified in AAT ICAS Basilicum-2061.
Licensees claiming ICAS conformance level A must indicate adherence to all of the conditions of conformance by one of the following methods:
- reference use of the ICAS conformance logo A via hyperlink to http://www.aatideas.org/now/icas.html now ICAS page.
- incorporate a text reference such as "ICAS in use conformance per the http://www.aatideas.org/now/icas.html now ICAS page".
- incorporate the text of the conditions for conformance as reference information accessible via methods corresponding to the scope of use.
- incorporate alternative text that satisfies all of the conditions referenced here for the use of the conformance logo, as reference information accessible via methods corresponding to the scope of use.
checkpoints for ICAS conformance level A
guideline 2062-01. representation of date and time information with proper formats that are user-centered for a general reader or user. A general reader or user can be presumed the possibility to be accustomed to one or more different conventions for the representation of dates and times, or may be presumed the possibility to possess a disability such as limited sight or limited hearing. A general reader may moreover be presumed to have no prior knowledge of how a content provider has organized and applied particular formatting conventions. This checkpoint concerns areas referenced in the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0 document at http://www.w3.org/TR/WAI-WEBCONTENT as part of the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) at W3C.
Date and time information are common parameters for users in the course of initiating searches and responding to forms. To the extent that time or date information can serve as a unit or mechanism of navigation, WAI WEBCONTENT guideline 13 to "provide clear navigation mechanisms" indicates a direction for the development of clear and consistent representations of time and date information in document systems. WAI WEBCONTENT guideline 14 to "ensure that documents are clear and simple so that they may be more easily understood" indicates a direction for the development of more practicable formats for the representation of dates and times. A rationale for the development and use of uniform scales of date and time can be formulated in terms of usability and web accessibility; however licensees should note that connections between ICAS and usability and web accessibility are subject to further development and further specification. ICAS guidelines for checkpoint 2062.01 include the following:
Proper date and time formats should be readily unambiguous with regard to the scale (IDC or SMH, Uniform Calendar and New Calendar or Gregorian calendar) and with regard to the interpretation of component units such as year, month, and day. Proper formats are foremost clear with little or no formatting cues (such as yyyy-mm-dd). If a general user has reasonable cause to question which numerical units (for example, 03/05/03) on a web page are year or month or day then the format does not conform with ICAS level A. Format components should possess an appropriate number of places for the proper representation of a component: hour, minutes, and seconds are properly represented to 2 places each, even if the first place is a leading zero (for example, 01). Decitriads are properly represented to 3 places each, even if the first places are leading zeros (for example, t001). Day-of-month is likewise properly represented to 2 places. Please see AAT ICAS Basilicum-2020 and AAT ICAS Basilicum-2340 and other ICAS standards documents for additional guidelines on the use of proper formats.
guideline 2062-02. proper representation of time and date scales. This checkpoint concerns the normative usage of metrication terms and the normative use of scalar expressions. Please see AAT ICAS Basilicum-2020, 2023, 2076, 3105 and other ICAS standards for guidelines on the proper usage of metrication terms and scalar expressions.
guideline 2062-03. proper use of an approved ICAS localization for uses of ICAS uniform scales of time and date. This checkpoint pertains to the use of the New Calendar, Uniform Calendar, or Inter-Dial Clock systems; and includes the use of ICAS uniform yeargroup element sets. This checkpoint also pertains to the use of ICAS element sets and ICAS vocabulary for the representation of traditional scales of date and time.
However the representation of traditional scales of date and time independent of ICAS element sets and ICAS vocabulary is not subject to an approved ICAS localization. For this type of conformance claim, ICAS licensees should exercise considerable care not to misrepresent a claim of ICAS conformance level A.
guideline 2062-04. reference to an effective version of ICAS. This checkpoint concerns the methods by which licensee use of ICAS is referenced to an effective version of ICAS. Please see AAT ICAS Basilicum-1002 and AAT ICAS Basilicum-9059 for guidelines. If an effective version is not explicitly referenced in the use of an ICAS conformance logo, then some methods for accessing this information must be provided in relation to the scope of use for a claim of conformance. Hyperlinking an ICAS conformance level A logo to the designated AAT ICAS conformance area web page is one method for satisfying this checkpoint.
guideline 2062-05. usage of ICAS conformance logo A. This checkpoint concerns the methods by which licensees use or represent conformance logo A. Alt text should be coded as "ICAS in use level A". Please refer to AAT ICAS Basilicum-2027 for additional guidelines. Licensees may also re-review conformance with each of the other conditions and guidelines for ICAS conformance level A.
