1) what's new—web site renovation in process

Most of the aatideas.org web site is now migrated to 'xht' filetypes to improve web browsing, and also to present content more accessibly to certain mobile or handheld device platforms.

As web standards further develop, and as browsers further improve, the web site can be rendered best with a recent- or current-version modern XHTML and CSS-ready browser. Those using a legacy browser (pre-XHTML) can select from a growing number of XHTML browsers that can be obtained at no charge from various third-parties.

web

2) AAT technology timeline*—compendium of progress in web and PDF formats

Browse through a concise yet comprehensive history of technology on the web, or print the PDF documents to set up a display to metric specifications.

*Visit the AAT retrospect at 'http://www.aatideas.org/tech/0.xht' for an AAT technology timeline of 10 000 years of civilization. The overview of technology history is presented via the New Calendar (NC) timeline, a metric timeline that is one component of the Integrated Chronological Applications System (ICAS) described below.

web

3) AAT ICAS metric-time initiative*—ICAS_now software kit update

the most recent ICAS_now software kit update features clipboardICAS 1.07 and foldatimeICAS 1.03 applications (and source code) for Mac OS X.

clipboardICAS generates a date and time stamp selected by the user. foldatimeICAS generates a folder and file named with designated identifier, date, and time strings.

use clipboardICAS and foldatimeICAS to organize workflows with ICAS (Integrated Chronological Applications System) formats for expressing dates and times. ICAS formatted expressions can be sorted once for both alphabetical and chronological order without additional data coordination. ICAS formatted expressions can also be readily truncated and expanded for designated formats.

*ICAS develops a metric paradigm for representing calendar and clock formats for more practicable representations of time data. Because ICAS scale formats are easy to write and clear to read, ICAS standards can accommodate usable improvements in ways that people can process time and date information. Visit AAT ICAS Itinica at 'http://www.aatideas.org/iota/0.xht' for the most current aatideas.org localization of the Integrated Chronological Applications System.

web

4) AAT special topics*—environmental initiatives

Browse the environmental topics page for links to initiatives promoting environmental values.

*Look to the special topics area of the aatideas web for convenient links to various sites across the Internet that are involved in certain initiatives related to developments in technology.

web

5) a focus on progress*—value of green

A green attitude doesn't cost any money, yet can save a great deal of limited resources. A green business model is an efficient economic model for managing and for developing limited resources. A green economy means more and not less limited resources.

*In each issue of aatideas in Brief, a focus on progress examines selected strategies and examples concerning the applicable development and use of technologies. To contribute or to guest edit, send an e mail to AAT.

web

6) AAT membership*—environmental awareness month

To raise awareness of and to promote good environmental practices, AAT commemorates the fourth uniform month D, of even leap year UCN 12008 (UCA 2008), days 091-120 (AD 2008 March 31 Monday to April 29 Tuesday), as environmental awareness month.

Take some time every month to get informed and to plan ahead for a greener economy for a greener environment. Use your power as a consumer to make purchasing decisions that account for a greener environment.

*Look to the 'about AAT' area of the aatideas.org for more information about AAT programs to develop quality educational programming for members and other interested parties. Membership or volunteer activities can be structured to provide development of skills and experience.

1) what's new—best wishes for an ICAS new year

'ICAS now' opensource resources remain at an early stage of development, however an important update of the clipboardICAS is available at no charge.

The update improves datetime object referencing with support for additional date format configurations and additional global time zones. Pick any OS X time zone, or any OS X date format, and clipboardICAS calculates a selected ICAS datetime format. (previous versions of the script that only worked for select time zones or for select date time formats are now deprecated.)

clipboardICAS can help you to be more ready to work with and to manage datetime information for the new year. To obtain the open-source application and the script, download the ICAS_now_c7Z16.dmg disc image (Mac OS X, 1.21 MiB) from the AAT ICAS Itinica area of this site.

3) AAT ICAS metric-time initiative*—ICAS traceability to SI

A review of a possible future metrological framework that can be referenced in terms of an ICAS (Integrated Chonological Applications System) that is traceable to SI (International System of Units, Le Système International d'Unités) remains in process. The development of a larger SI-ICAS framework however calls for additional consideration of standards for the normative usage of one or more metrological frameworks. Those interested in additional information about ICAS development should register an ICAS license, or subscribe to the aaticas forum.

*ICAS develops a metric paradigm for representing calendar and clock formats for more practicable representations of time data. Because ICAS scale formats are easy to write and clear to read, ICAS standards can accommodate usable improvements in ways that people can process time and date information. web

5) a focus on progress*—everyday usability

In everyday life, date and time information is commonly interchanged from one format to another. Sources of interchange include:

  • contextual focus
  • (day-of-week, day-of-month, month-of-year, year-of-decade, year-of-century)
  • what weekday is January 1st?
  • what day-of-month is the first Wednesday?
  • does this '07' refer to '1907' or '2007'?
  • formal and informal conventions, styles, or practices
  • (language, locale, time zone, organization, and so forth)
  • is the time 0800 a morning or an evening time?
  • mode of communication
  • (face-to-face, writing, telephone, keypad, keyboard, and so forth)
  • technological interface
  • (numeric telephone keypad, computer keyboard, touchscreen, and so forth)

Certain good or best practices for communicating date and time information can increase the usability or accessibility of data for general readers (readers for whom there might not be a common single format for writing or reading dates). These practices include spelling out the month, and using 4 places for a year, so that a date is clearer to a reader.

*In each issue of aatideas in Brief, a focus on progress examines selected strategies and examples concerning the applicable development and use of technologies. To contribute or to guest edit, send an e mail to AAT.

web

6) AAT membership*—development and review of 'ICAS now'

The first steps toward a transition from ICAS '6 Agave' to ICAS '7 Basilicum' are in place. The eventual update of the remaining ICAS standards documents is expected to be completed after some additional development and review of a few 'ICAS now' projects. Interested parties are encouraged to register an ICAS license, or subscribe to the aaticas forum.

3) AAT ICAS metric-time initiative*—dstampUC datestamp localizations, ICAS Basilicum, ICAS now

Some ICAS datestamp localizations can be obtained from the AAT ICAS web calendars page at no charge. New aatideas localizations for German, French, Italian, and Spanish are developed with machine translation. Localization authorities and standards developing organizations can appropriate any ICAS copyright for use in developing their own ICAS standards.

All localizations developed by AAT are referencing 'aatideas' or 'aaticas' language codes. For example, ICAS users can reference 'en-aatideas' for purposes of specifying uses of ICAS. ICAS users can also reference, for example, an 'en-aaticas' localization; however references to 'aaticas' should be expected to be more subject to conformance with future developments of AAT ICAS standards.

The specification and review of AAT ICAS 7 'Basilicum' standards is underway. ICAS developers can reference 'ICAS now' standards for open-source development.

1) what's new—welcome visitor hundred-kiloeon!

AAT will soon welcome the 100 000 th visitor to the aatideas.org domain. The occasion also provides a nice opportunity to use a metric-prefix expression like 'hundred-kiloeonth' as an alternative to the customary expression 'hundred-thousandth'. More on the usage of these prefix-expressions soon.

web

2) AAT technology timeline*—print charts scale mm to cm

Browse through a comprehensive history of technology on the web, or print the PDF documents to set up a display to metric specifications.

*Visit the AAT retrospect at http://www.aatideas.org for an AAT technology timeline of 10 000 years of civilization. The overview of technology history is presented via the New Calendar (NC) timeline, a metric timeline that is one component of the Integrated Chronological Applications System (ICAS) described below.

web

3) AAT ICAS metric-time initiative*—why ICAS?

ICAS specifies a more metric calendar and clock interface for more measures of time. Because ICAS scale formats are easy to write and clear to read, ICAS standards can accommodate usable improvements in ways that people can process time and date information.

*Heard about the new styles for writing dates and times? Because they are easy to write and clear to read, there is no question why they are the new preferred style for representing dates and times. Read more in AAT ICAS Agave and in ISO 8601. Visit AAT ICAS Itinica at http://www.aatideas.org/itinica/index.html for the most current aatideas localization of the Integrated Chronological Applications System.

*Look to the special topics area of the aatideas web for convenient links to various sites across the Internet that are involved in certain initiatives related to developments in technology.

web

5) a focus on progress*—business objectives redefined

Entrepreneur Paul Hawken's 1993 book The Ecology of Commerce: A Declaration of Sustainability makes a matter-of-fact case for why companies need to "re-envision and re-imagine themselves as cyclical corporations" in practicing good corporate stewardship of economic resources. For example, energy companies can transform a business model that might have been defined in terms of non-renewable resources such as fossil fuels. A variety of renewable energy alternatives hold several opportunities for creating more value for energy producers, suppliers, and consumers.

*In each issue of aatideas in Brief, a focus on progress examines selected strategies and examples concerning the applicable development and use of technologies. To contribute or to guest edit, send an e mail to AAT.

5) a focus on progress*—economic initiatives for developing technologies

Economist Vernon Ruttan in 2006 questions how industrial production in the United States has related to war and defense. Numerous modern technologies such as network and satellite communications, jet propulsion, semiconductors, nuclear power, and space exploration were developed for US military projects. Yet political and geopolitical forces are changing the role of military projects as a focus for developing new technologies. Other sectors of the economy can also initiate the development of new technologies. Impetus for economic performance can be found in markets for renewable resources, medical treatments, and media technologies.

1) what's new—preparing for next decade of progress

Alliance for the Advancement of Technology celebrates 10 years of focus on the development of applicable philosophies of technology. The first decade of operation had also coincided with a transition to a new millennium. During which time the development of a uniform calendar for a new calendar era highlighted the commemoration of a retrospect of 10 000 years of civilization. For the next decade of operation, AAT hopes to improve efforts for developing progress.

5) a focus on progress*—designing a calendar and clock

A history of global and technological developments has changed ways that people measure time. Maintaining a state of the art in the midst of rapid technological development calls for a careful review of prior developments. Yet a collective history of the development of calendars and clocks seems not to document a number of objective and subjective considerations that might inform the review of a state of the art.

Calendars and clocks are however not only technologies. Expressions of date and time also convey cultural traditions, some of which are deeply rooted. Although states of the art may be created from time to time, the development of a state of the art does not displace the study of earlier states of the art.

5) a focus on progress*—users and time management

Some people choose to set their clocks or watches a little fast, to avoid being late. This practical method of time management, whether reckoned intentionally or incidentally, is just as true for clocks that display a decimal representation of a day; as it is for traditional clocks displaying seconds, minutes, and hours. Other comparisons of new and traditional scales of calendar and clock may also be interesting; however not all comparisons offer clear 'rules-of-thumb' for time management. It is probably easier to understand a particular clock dial in terms of its own day-fraction scheme, rather than in the terms of another scheme (e.g., 12-60-60 and 24-60-60, or 100-100-100). A similar comparison can also be made between the Uniform and Gregorian calendars. With one exception, the day-of-month number for a uniform month is either larger than or equal to the day-of-month number for a Gregorian month. The exceptions to this 'rule-of-thumb' are the days in the month of March, for common years. So if you rely on that rule of thumb, then "beware the Ides of March!"

5) a focus on progress*—formats and usability

Format can be regarded as a means by which information is presented. Format sometimes refers to a mode of communication such as video, slide, or print. Yet units of information such as dates and times are also described in terms of format. A consideration of format issues, some of which are not entirely obvious, can however inform the design of effective communications.

Jean-Luc Doumont in 2002 describes three laws of communication: adapt to your audience, maximize the signal-to-noise ratio, and use effective redundancy. Effective communication concerns getting messages across. Edward R. Tufte in 2003 describes format factors that can influence the effectiveness of slide presentations created by software programs, and cautions readers about relying on slide styles to determine content. A focus on the content choices rather than format features of a slide further reminds communicators that "detail should clarify, not clutter." Effective use of a format concerns the effective use of substantive content.

5) a focus on progress*—placing an economic value on environment

In the 2002 book The Future of Life, scientist and educator Edward O. Wilson describes approaches for placing an economic value on environmental resources. In an age where economists envision cycles of production and consumption, and ecologists are alarmed by adverse effects of human economic growth on the environment; Wilson portrays our current era as one in which both viewpoints must come to terms: a Century of the Environment. Readers are cautioned that the economic value of environmental resources on our planet may be far greater than has been economically accounted.

"Ecosystem services are defined as the flow of materials, energy, and information from the biosphere that support human existence. They include the regulation of the atmosphere and climate; the purification and retention of fresh water; the formation and enrichment of the soil; nutrient cycling; the detoxification and recirculation of waste; the pollination of crops; and the production of lumber, fodder, and biomass fuel." (p. 106)

An international team of economists and scientists in 1997 estimated the economic value of goods and services provided by the living natural environment to be 33 or more teradollars (T$) each year. In comparison with a 1997 gross world product of 18 teradollars (T$), replacing the planet's ecosystem would nearly triple the cost of the gross world product. This example is one of many in the book to highlight the gravity of additional costs of economic practices by which environmental habitats and ecosystems are lost due to certain patterns of human economic growth.

5) a focus on progress*—progress and form, progress and style

Ben Shneiderman in 2003 describes a transformation to new computing that is driven by a focus on personal values in the use of technologies. Personal values relating to the use of calendar and clock technologies might be seen to encompass notions of ease of use or cultural familiarity, yet personal values can also encompass technical considerations such as the increased precision inherent to a generalized use of a decimalized scale of time. Development of ICAS standards has largely focused on the determination of uniform schemes for the formatting of calendar and clock scales. A principle of uniformity is determined in relation to a principle of reducing exceptions to a scheme. ICAS calendar and clock scales are derived primarily from a solar-ecliptic calendar year and the UTC day, and from a system of solar-ecliptic calendar year months approximating the lunar cycle. Cultural familiarity with an emerging development such as ICAS is virtually unknown. However a linguistic review of ICAS usage and style finds that ICAS can be used fluently and practicably for purposes of communicating a wide range of calendar and clock information.

The promise of a system representing an exceptional opportunity for an upgrade of calendar and clock technologies also calls for a careful consideration of a number of training and transition issues. Recent ICAS developments have also focused on creating user-centered support for the use of multiple scales including traditional calendar and clock systems. Users of ICAS may enjoy the ease of use involved in the practicable use of a Uniform Calendar or an Inter-Dial Clock. Yet the pre-existing use of traditional scales of calendar and clock imposes a steep infrastructural curve on an ICAS feature set that may be otherwise comparatively more practicable. ICAS anticipates strategies for reducing the infrastructure curve based on recent developments in software development and localization support.

As an emerging state of the art, ICAS systems and formats are more practicably structured for a system of the modern uses of calendar and clock scales. As a matter of usable design, ICAS designates practical or natural schemes such as alphabetical order and scalar coherence that are hypothesized to need less additional reinforcement in comparison with the use of traditional scales. ICAS formats can be expressed more practicably because of the use of uniform schemes and because of coherence with the main unit. With appropriately determined ICAS scales and features, users may more practicably express designated dates and times more clearly and more concisely than via the use of traditional scales.

A unit of 1 day is a main unit in every terrestrial culture. However the chronological infrastructure and cultural heritage that surround the use of traditional scales of calendar and clock raise concerns about the development and use of uniform or metric scales. Issues of training or development should be considered with regard to best practices for metrication.

5) a focus on progress*—metrication strategies

Road traffic signs in all of Australia seemed to change overnight. This was achieved with careful planning by road authorities in all Australian states.

M-day for the change was set at 1974 July 01 [1974G02 UCA]. For a year before this, cars were built with metric speedometers and metric odometers, conversion kits were made available for older cars, and metric road signs were installed and then covered with inexpensive fabric. The covers were removed on the Saturday and Sunday before M-day (Monday) and Australians quickly learned to 'drive metric'. It took about another month to remove all the pre-metric signs. Dual signs were avoided.

To quote from the official Government report Metrication in Australia (ISBN 0 644 24860 2 - 1992): "As a result of these changes, conversions on the roads occurred without incident." and "Despite suggestions by people opposed to metrication that ignorance of the meaning of metric speeds would lead to slaughter on the roads, such slaughter did not occur."

This item was guest-edited by Pat Naughtin, who is a metrication consultant, based in Geelong, Australia. Pat has—through direct experience of metrication—identified many of the leadership issues associated with metrication programs. These include moral, mindset, and social, as well as technical issues. Pat Naughtin is also the editor of the free online newsletter Metrication matters. 5) a focus on progress*—technologies and users

Technologies in the modern era increasingly rely upon various systems of user resources. User documentation may be ubiquitous; however in a 1987 study Barbara Mirel advises that strategies for developing user resources anticipate how users will use a technology resource in a particular context. Case studies can reveal how particular user resources may be used or received by actual users, or reveal other strategies or norms by which users would seek information. Developers should consider that the use of user resources may be influenced by social contexts relating to the use of technologies. In a 1984 study Jennifer Slack describes how communication technologies are seen within the context of social processes, and how social processes constitute the emergence of technologies. Social processes can determine what it would mean for a user to look up system information in a manual, or to ask a co-worker or supervisor. Yet even as technologies and user resources are both characterized in terms of a particular social context, both are situated with regard to conditions of applicable use. Consideration of the dynamic relationships among technologies and users can yield much data toward enhancing the development of technologies and user resources.

Technology is regarded to advance by the discovery and development of new inventions; however this is only one side of technological development. Another perspective on the advancement of technology concerns applicable use. Important areas of focus for the applicable use of technology are training, implementation, and maintenance. An application of technology is not just a product or a result, but a process. Application processes can involve many layers of usability and economy: ease of use, efficiency, reliability, safety, security, cost, benefit, and value. Technologies of ‘best practice’ offer considerable promise in leveraging technological resources for the creation of wealth among local and global communities.
