AAT ICAS 3015 ✧ conformance level keywords
conformance level keywords
this document describes a methodology for the indication of conformance levels by the use of certain key words, and is modeled on best practices used in standards communities. please refer to RFC 2119 (http://www.w3c.org) for further information. please note that conformance level keywords are typically not capitalized in AAT ICAS standards documents.
the key words 'MUST', 'MUST NOT', 'REQUIRED', 'SHALL', 'SHALL NOT', 'SHOULD', 'SHOULD NOT', 'RECOMMENDED', 'MAY', and 'OPTIONAL' in AAT ICAS standards documents are to be interpreted as described in RFC 2119. key words 'IS' and 'ARE' moreover are to be interpreted as specifying definitive specifications of conformance with AAT ICAS standards. the adjective 'PREFERRED' is to be interpreted as a normative convention or designated best practice concerning AAT ICAS standards.
however some uses of the words may not be limited to use as conformance level keywords. that is, the words may not necessarily indicate a level of conformance or requirement. in such cases, it is thus important to consider the particular context or circumstances when applying particular AAT ICAS standards. as matters of conformance should be clear and unambiguous, the standards should be considered to be subject to ongoing review.
